Dear [[FirstName]]

Still got some Valentine's gifties?   Post-Valentine's, it's nice to remember that chocolate is chock full of health-promoting antioxidants.  It may even lower blood pressure.  But also remember that too much of a good thing ISN'T!

After you finish that two-pound box of Godiva, you might want to give yourself a gift of wellness by taking my interactive "How Healthy are You?" test.  Visit my website, www.supplementsavvyRD.com, and click on the star to get started.  After all, we've got Easter chocolate bunnies and chickies to get through!

To also help you easily reach your wellness goals, this eZine has three short sections.  The first section, Supplement News, is a hot-off-the-press scoop about a supplement currently in the news.

The second section, Supplement Spotlight, is a brief sketch of one particular supplement or related group of supplements and how they might benefit you.  In this issue, I'll give you some great guidelines for choosing a quality multivitamin.

The last section is called Questions???.  People keep asking me about supplements.   So I've decided to answer one in each issue .  Keep those questions coming!

I'm very excited about my new alliance with Emerson Ecologics.  Emerson Ecologics calls itself "Your One Stop Shop" for high quality vitamins, herbs, homeopathics and nutritional supplements.  They carry the entire catalogs of Pure Encapsulations, Allergy Research Group, Nordic Naturals and some other wonderful product lines.  This alliance allows me to offer you over 12,000 discounted supplements from  over 200 manufacturers at MY "One-Stop Health Shop" shipped fresh to your door for the same low $5.95 shipping fee.  You'll also be able to continue to purchase the entire great Metagenics line and get free shipping for orders of $101 or more.  And I'll still have available those specialty supplements that you can't get anywhere else, like L-Tryptophan, which I talk about in the next issue and the amazing Immune Multi described below in this week's feature article.  I'm adding new products every week.  So visit www.supplementsavvyRD.meta-ehealth.com often to find out about what's new.

And the surprises just keep coming!  You can now order a few functional tests right on my meta-ehealth website .  I'm now also allied with Detoxamin, an easy chelation therapy that helps remove heavy metals and other toxins from your body.  So you can orderkeys to your health hair and fecal toxicity analysis to see if that type of therapy might be right for you.  The hair analysis tells you what toxins exist right now.  The fecal analysis is a little more expensive but alot more  comprehensive and tells you how well your body eliminates toxins.  More Keys to your Health!

[NOTE: Some words in this eZine have been disguised to avoid triggering sp^m filters.]

People are always asking me about what to do about Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which is so common nowadays that it affects one in five Americans and accounts for one out of every 10 doctor visits. The most common symptoms include abdominal bloating, gas and the abnormal bowel discomforts of diarrhea and/or constipation.  Doctors can control the symptoms with medication but, unfortunately, the medical model can't seem to cure it.  Not only that, the latest IBS drug, Zelnorm, has recently been recalled as it was found to increase risk of heart attacks, strokes, angina and death

I've been treating IBS alternatively quite successfully for 15 years with elimination di*ets and supplements.  But I must admit that I've only been successful some of the time.  Because there are lots of confounding issues such as food allergies that make IBS difficult to treat.  And traditional food allergy testing, at best, fails to identify food sensitivities that may be making you sick.  Until now.

Now there's a better answer to IBS.  The Mediator Release Test (MRT) identifies reactions to 150 foods and chemicals that are difficult to diagnose with any other test.  It's 94.5% sensitive and 91.7% specific, which makes it the most sensitive allergy test on the planet!  And, coupled, with the LEAP elimination d^ie*t based upon the MRT results, it may end your IBS suffering once and for all!

One of my clients, who's been suffering for years, found her symptoms cut in half  TWO WEEKS after beginning the program. "I love not being sick!", she said.  So if you'd like more information,  check out "LEAP Mediator Release Testing" in the "Functional Testing" category on the left-hand side of my online store.  And visit LEAP's website, www.nowleap.com. Or give me a call or e-mail me and I'd be glad to answer any questions.

QUESTIONS??? E-mail me at jill@supplementsavvyRD.com and you may get your question answered here.

Supplement News

In a recent study of 220 women with depression, 54% used an alternative approach, wanting treatments to be congruent with their own values and beliefs. And because of past experiences in which conventional medical therapies had caused unpleasant side effects or had seemed ineffective.

In another recent study, healthy women taking L-Tryptophan, an amino acid supplement, reported the same positive cognitive changes as derived from certain forms of antidepressants. This study suggests a key role for Tryptophan-influenced neurotransmitter, serotonin, in emotional processing and lends support to the use of L-Tryptophan as a nutritional supplement in people with mild depression or for prevention in those at risk.

I'm going to talk alot more about L-Tryptophan in the next issue.  But you might want to check it out on my online sto^re, www.supplementsavvyRD.meta-ehealth.com before that if you need a simple solution to mild depression or insomnia.  True to my pledge to bring you the best supplements I can find, I carry the best brand available.

Supplement Spotlight

p*ills and bottleTo Multi or Not to Multi . . . and prithee . . . what Multi?

It's pretty well-accepted by everyone these days, including doctors, that WE ALL SHOULD TAKE A MULT$VITAMIN. The Journal of the American Medical Asociation recommends that all adults take a multiv#itamin daily. Their recent 30-year review article supports the use of vitamins in preventing common illnesses such as heart disease and cancer.

But then the question always arises . . . what multi should I take?  Well, I just can't recommend the one-a-day variety.  I know that they're the most commonly used, but there's lots of problems involved in taking them.  First of all they don't dissolve well.  Multis have to dissolve completely within thirty minutes so that their nutrients are available for absorption in the small intestine.  And many of those daily multis have coatings that make that impossible.  Especially if your digestion is impaired.

Second, the best multis have the most highly absorbable forms of vitamins and minerals.  Many of us think that, if we take . . . say . . . 500 milligrams of Vitamin C that our bodies get all 500.  But that's just not so.  In reality, we only obsorb between 3 and 50% of most nutrients, and less with impaired digestion.

So it's important that you have highly-absorbable nutrient forms in your multi to get as much good stuff as you can.  These forms often cost more.  That's why a good-quality multi costs from over $20 to almost $80 a month.  Where supplements are concerned, you truly get what you pay for!

For instance, most one-a-days have inorganic minerals like carbonates, citrates, gluconates and lactates.  They're convenient, but are usually poorly absorbed, decrease absorption of other minerals from food and supplements and can cause digestive upset.  Here's a great example . . . only about 3 to 20% of calcium carbonate, the most commonly prescribed form of calcium, is absorbed.  In contrast, Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite (MCHC), another calicum form, can be up to 50% absorbed.  It also promotes bone growth.  And it doesn't cause the digestive upset that Calcium Carbonate may cause.  Which would you choose?  Even if it costs more?

The best multis also have amino acid chelates.  Minerals have to have an organic carrier, like a protein (amino acid), for them to be carried in the bloodstream and enter and be used by cells.  The best amino acid chelates are made by a company called Albion.  So if your multi lists "amino acid chelate" or "Albion chelate" next to a mineral on the label, you most likely have one of good quality.

But, here's the deal.  Amino acid chelates are big molecules!  Proteins are the largest food molecules.  So when you attach two of them to a mineral, you're making a very large nutrient. As a result, you just can't take one of a quality multi.  Very often, you'll have to take three . . . six . . . even NINE pi#lls a day.  As well as taking them in at least two divided doses to keep nutrient blood serum levels up.

There are lots of other considerations for choosing a quality multi too numerous to list here.  As well as drug-nutrient interactions and allergic reactions to consider.  If you'd like more information about multis, please go here.   This education piece from my book, Supplement Savvy, is in PDF format so you need Acrobat Reader to view it.

Finally, here are some multivitamin recommendations.  First, the Immune Multi from Drs. Country Health is a personal favorite and the one that I take.  It contains not only vitamins and minerals, but over 100 ingredients to support your immune system.  They even have a "super" version that you can special-order from me that contains Omega-3 fatty acids, adrenal and immune support and even DNA. Before you order it, however, I'd suggest that to check out its ingredient list on my online store at www.supplementsavvyRD.meta-ehealth.com to make sure that you're not allergic to any of them.

But if you think $50 ($80 for the "super" version) a month is just too much to pay for a multi, Multigenics Intensive Care from Metagenics is also a great one at almost half the price.  It's available with and without iron (most men don't need extra iron) as well as in powder and chewable forms for those who can't take p&ills.  Another great multi available on my online store is Nutrient 950 from Pure Encapsulations.  This is the multi I recommend for cancer survivors as one of the versions has no copper, iron or bioflavonoids in it.  Another version that I offer has N-Acetyl-l-Cysteine (NAC), a powerful free radical scavenger that supports the body's natural defense system. NAC supports tissue levels of glutathione, a key component of the antioxidant defense system. NAC also has the ability to chelate heavy metals, which makes it the ideal multivitamin to include in the Detoxamin chelation therapy regime .  Eight capsules of Nutrient 950 with NAC contain 1,000 mg of NAC and no boron, copper, iron or iodine.

Another economical multi that's one of the favorites of many alternative nutritionists is Natrol's My Favorite Multiple.  This multi has Albion chelates as well as enzymes and flavonoids.  I don't offer this particular supplement at my s#tore, but it's regularly available on the internet or possibly at your Health Food Store.

Any supplement regime I create always starts with a multi.  Check out the "Basic Supplements for Healthy People"  custom packet on the right side of my online s%tore for the "Big Three" everyone should take . . . a multi, some fish oils and a phytonutrient complex.  If you're interested in adding one of the best calcium supplements around to these basics, try Metagenic's Cal Apatite 1000, chock full of MCHC.  Oh . . . and don't forget to crack open some post-Valentine's cheer . . . pear nectar or carrot juice . . . and drink to your health.

In the Next Issue:  Tryptophan . . . The Natural Prozac
